Lucy is our little 'Tip Bull
Terrier' who was dropped from heaven, Lucy is a LAD sufferer or better
known in the breed a Zincer. I have kept Zincers in the
past and have found them to be adorable so I decided to
adopt her straight away. Lucy came to me in need of lots
of TLC and the right treatment for her illness, she has
gone from strength to strength and is now winning
trophies at Welfare Parades.
Lucy's Story
The RSPCA Report on Lucy (June 2007)
Little Lucy was picked up by the Dog Wardens
after a report of a dog straying at the Recycling Centre / Dump in Weston Super
Mare. When they got there, she was actually wrapped in some discarded fencing
where she had been left throughout a cold and rainy night. -
Intentional or accidental we will never know.
She was immediately taken to the Vets as it was clear she was in very poor
condition. She was treated for Demodectic Mange, ear and eye infections, and had
incredibly infected sore feet and skin. She was also extremely under-nourished,
and appeared to have a slightly deformed carpus on her front left limb, probably
due to the dreadful / non-existent diet she has been on. She also had nails
growing into her pads on all feet - these nails were very bendy when cutting was
attempted, again probably due to poor nutrition. She was probably about 7 months
old, but again due to such poor body condition, it is so hard to tell. Her
confirmation suggested she may even be a Mini?
After several weeks her general demeanour greatly improved, although she
still found it very difficult to stand, she would always greet you very warmly!
She had picked up a bacterial nose infection whilst at the kennels (probably due
to her low immune system) she found hard to shake off. She will
probably be more comfortable going into a warm comfy home where love and care
will be able to do what drugs cannot.
Lucy in the beginning
Little Lucy when first picked up by the dog warden.
A couple of weeks after arriving at Badlesmere.
So content to be in loving home.
And so to Welfare and then her new forever home
After being picked up on the dump wrapped in fencing that in all honesty she
could not have managed herself as she was just far to weak to even walk, she was
more likely shoved in it and left to die. She spent a month in RSPCA kennels
being cared for. At first unable to stand properly and
in far to much pain to walk little Lucy would snap an
anyone who dared to touch her, not surprising really
after all she had known nothing but pain and abuse so
why on earth would she want to welcome any human
contact. It is also known that Lucy was used as a scam
and basically sold then stolen again to be sold again so
god knows how many homes she has been in and out off. We
can only presume as her coat colour faded (trait in
zincies) and her skin and feet began to worsen she
became to unattractive to sell on, so was dumped and left to die, starving, cold and alone
on a city dump in awful weather.
Little Lucy was taken into Welfare kennels to be cared for by a BTW volunteer
whilst receiving urgent medical attention, after two weeks she had regained some
strength and she was able to be transported by two very kind BTW volunteers
(both doing part of a very long journey) to Juliet Shaw at Badlesmere Kennels,
Juliet (a Welfare trustee) had been in constant touch with the RSPCA who had
been treating her after she was picked up by the dog warden and soon realised
from her own vast experience that this little girl was in fact a zincer puppy
and offered her a home. Juliet knows how to look after a zincer and understands
the special care required to keep this little bully as healthy and as
comfortable as possible, so Lucy landed on all four paws and now has the care
she needs.
Little Lucy arrived at Juliet’s weighing in at just 7kgs and still in need of
vast veterinarian treatment for her skin and her feet amongst other things. She
now has a warm comfy bed and some very good food and so much love and attention,
she gained 3kgs in just under two weeks and her skin and feet began to look
better, there was still a long way to go but she can at least take a few steps
now which she couldn’t do when she first arrived. I have had the pleasure of
meeting Lucy and what a little stunner she is, she is a very pretty, sweet
little lady and extremely happy and friendly, she has obviously lacked any kind
of love, care or attention in her short little life but now she has it all in
abundance and enjoying every minute. After all this little girl has been through
being dumped and left to die she has defiantly 'survived against all the odds'
and now deserves the chance to live in comfort and happiness and safety.
August 2008
After just a year of love and attention Lucy is doing extremely well, her
feet are in as good a condition as anyone could ever have hope for and she can
potter around the house and garden as well as any fun days she gets the chance
to attend, her skin and general well being are
excellent. Lucy adores visitors and visiting, she has attended a couple of fun
days where she has won awards for 'Best Rescue dog' and walked away with
wonderful rosettes and a huge silver trophy (The Fred Nicholls memorial Trophy). She has also had fun entering a
fancy dress competition along with her zincer friend Lottie and got a 2nd prize
for that, but more than anything she has had fun and lots of it. Lucy is adored
by everyone who meets her and has made lots of new friends whilst being out and
about, we look forward to seeing those friends at other events in the near
future and of course Lucy is always ready to make more new friends.
